What is your artist's name?
Atomic Fruit
How long have you been writing music?
Together since 2021. Individually, since forever.
What inspired you to start playing and making music?
Atomic Fruit met serendipitously in 2021 at a concert of the art punk band Suuns. They quickly found a common interest in effect pedals and unconventional compositions and two weeks later played their first show in Berlin.
What were the driving forces or pivotal moments that inspired you to pursue music?
We love to explore the boundaries of sound. Composition in the rock realm can be so boring, and we like to keep things interesting. Live, we are probably the most complicated nightmare of a band that a sound engineer can imagine; dozens of pedals, everything running in feedback; a complete wall of sound and a lot of the time impossible to figure out who is making what sound.
How would you describe your style of music?
Menacing, foreboding, nostalgic, paranoid art rock with a credible threat of going into double time.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
We love to get lost in music and seek refuge in the world of harmony where everything is sacred, playful, and spontaneous at the same time. We make a lot of jokes, too, but that only sometimes shines through the actual songs.
Describe your creative process when you write new music.
Most of it comes from playing and jamming together. We explore different textures and riffs together and string different ideas together to create a composition that goes somewhere you might not expect.
What is the name of your latest release?
Play Dough
What was the inspiration for that release?
Many songs have been with the singer Martin for a while, looking for the perfect context to be embedded in. Others came together between us, jamming as a band. The inspiration lies in the journey of music and musicality; finding new ways and new directions where the music can take us.
What challenges or unexpected moments did you encounter during the writing/recording process?
Finding our own sound – with it being our first release, we didn't have a previous relationship with a studio, a mixing engineer, or a label. We had to improvise, and only later did we find out what worked and what didn't.
What strategies do you find most effective for promoting your music?
• Playing shows - Playlisting on Spotify and radio - Emailing, emailing, emailing
How do you engage with your fans online and offline?
We play regular shows in and around Berlin. A lot of what we do is best experienced live. If you are in Berlin, hit us up and come see us, or check out our website: atomicfruit.baby. Martin made it inspired by 90s video games. It cracks us up.
What upcoming promotional activities or releases are you most excited about?
We are preparing to release another album towards the end of 2024. The tracks are starting to return from mixing now and we couldn't be happier with the sound.
