Owen Marchildon
Dangling Towards Heavy Sunlight

Previously releasing in a long and distinguished career under monikers such as Purple Hill, Rough Skeletons, Marchildon!, and High Wasted, this Dangling Towards Heavy Sunlight album, his first under his own name, ticks all the boxes for me in terms of its “jangly credentials.”

As such, the album is likely to find heavy rotation on “summer playlists” in the southern hemisphere with Heavy Dreams, well-chosen lead single Celebrity Singles, Weather Girl, and The Dumbness Of Love marrying impeccable Big Star-influenced 1970s power-pop with concentrated core jangled riffs that startle with the beauty of their resonation.

However, it’s not solely about the most obvious of beauty. Marchildon shows in Ginger Norwegian and Slaughter that he has has the ability to blend a dark, post-rock edged cinematic style with the post-punk theatricality of Echo and the Bunnymen to wallow in the most precious of deep, dark and dulcet.

When I look back on 2024, this Orangeville, Ontario based artist and album are likely to be one of my finds of the year !!!
