Equal parts beauty and brutality, Little Systems' debut LP I Was a Deer portrays a self fighting to get free. Tangled in webs of desire and memory, reaching for goodness but confounded by ghosts and demons within and without, the record’s nine tracks crash through the undergrowth into the open fields awaiting the hunted, healing heart. In single “Cache,” frothing synth, electrifying guitar and drums, and arresting alto vocals build into a danceable anthem about being dragged into the digital undertow. “Blood from a Stone” brings a subverted dark folk/Americana sensibility to a howling song about a cursed friendship. The record ends with “Beatitude,” a ballad-prayer that reaches beyond belief into rageful hope.
