How long have you been writing music?

Since before I can remember. I was around three or four when I first started playing, and I recall ripping off the Doctor Who theme to create my first composition at about five.

What inspired you to start playing and making music?

I don't know - I can't remember a time I haven't done it! I love making music, regardless of the style. If there's an audience, so much the better, and if I can get my music recorded and out to people's ears, even better.

How would you describe your style of music?

Hmm… Cinematic, mostly instrumental shoegaze-y post-rock with occasional weird instruments. Is that a genre?

How is your personality reflected in your work?

Wow, good question! I hear that my music is pretty chilled out for the most part, and that's certainly true of me. When I write lyrics, they are bleak, and I don't think that's a part of me that I generally show much anywhere else. Maybe 'sometimes very loud, sometimes very quiet' would cover it.

Describe your creative process when you write new music.

In a word, improvisation. Sometimes, the final takes are improvised noodling that takes shape into something halfway through. Once I have an idea, I just 'hear' the rest in my head and set about making it reality. For Oneironaut, I refined that process a little, chopped bits around, and gave it all more polish. I think it's easily the best T.S.R. output so far as a result.

What is the name of your latest release?

There's a new album coming out soon (release date T.B.C.) called Consequence. It's more guitar-driven than Oneironaut as it was written for the Lights & Lines 'Write an album in a month' challenge. The lead single, 'Bossa Never' won the public vote for best single and came out on Lights & Lines on 15th August.

What was the inspiration for that release?

Initially, the time pressure of writing and recording an album in 31 days! It started to seem like I had some lighter tracks, like Bossa Never, and some darker stuff. Somehow, it threaded into a kind of narrative flow near the end of the month. It starts all bright and optimistic and descends into dystopian sci-fi around halfway through.

Can you tell us any "behind the scenes" stories about writing or producing this release?

It was manic. Trying to write and record an album in 31 days is not something I'd recommend unless you want to seriously provoke your family members. Luckily, I think they understood. The track 'Starfall' was named by my youngest daughter, who pointed out that I kept singing about stars falling down to that tune. I used the vocal idea in question as a reprise of Starfall at the bleakest point of the album.

What do you do to promote your music?

Nowhere near enough. I'm awful at it. I'll sing the praises of everyone else's great music and not mention my own anywhere near enough. That said, The Post-Rock Appreciation Society on Facebook has been close to my heart for many years. It's a great community of post-rock fans that support everyone in the genre.

What are you currently working on?

Getting Consequence released. I'm about to get a short run of CDs made up and start sending out review links. I should probably set a release date too… Other than that, I've made my first-ever cover for Only The Host, who is putting together an album of Nirvana covers.
